The Life of Cacophony

Still Image

Video

For this assignment we had to choose a word and create a still image and video to express the meaning of the word. I chose the word “Cacophony”. This word means loud and harsh sounds or anything really unpleasing to the ear.  My concept for my video was intentionally supposed to be someone sitting in a corner with their ears closed while noise is in the background. I decided to change that by showing different objects that make loud and/or annoying sounds e.g. ticking clock. For the still image I originally wanted to have a close-up of someone’s ear while another smaller person was yelling into it.  I also changed the idea for my still image and thought that I should have a shot where someone is closing their ears while people are yelling at him/her.
The design elements that I used to tie the still and video together are that I used balance. For example in the video I used it by making some of the scenes soft noise and then it gets loud then soft again. For the still I balanced it by putting equal people on either side of the person closing their ears. This also shows that loud and harsh sounds can come from any direction. I think that my still expresses my word well because it shows people yelling and the girl/boy is covering their ears because the people are irritating her and there being loud. For my video I think that I expressed cacophony because I showed some objects that would be loud and/or annoying to hear like a ticking clock and dripping tap. For the class scene I showed a teacher teaching while kids are listening but they appear to be bored. I added different sounds to represent that some students may feel like the teacher is saying things that they don’t care about so it appears to sound like loud booming or random sounds.
The scenes that are shown in my video are a ticking clock, tap dripping, class room, traffic scene, fireworks and a girl closing her ears. The orders of the scenes are in the order listed above. I did it this way by showing certain objects that are annoying to hear and then it gets really loud then back to soft. The shots that are soft are closer up to show the emotion and the louder ones are farther away to show more of the scene.
Do create this video I used iMovie and a Nikon camera. iMovie was a create movie maker tool to sequence the shots and add effects to my movie. I think I did well for my video and still because I personally think that I expressed my word. It was fun and hard at parts. I think that I could have been more specific with what I wanted and it would have been easier to create the video. Overall I think I did well.

Peacock

The assignment we had to do was to make a reduction print.
We had to pick a type of bird. I chose to do a peacock. Instead of making the peacock realistic
I chose to use simple shapes which makes this piece abstract.

My Digital Surrealism Photo

My surreal topic is based on the environment and pollution. I chose this topic because I think that pollution in our society is a big problem and we need to fix it. Pollution in our world is huge and I feel like we’re killing earth faster by not caring and damaging it. I brainstormed some ideas like a picture of the earth with garbage coming out of it and a lake with someone swimming in garbage. I ended up using the idea of the lake with a swimmer swimming in garbage.  At first I wanted to fill the entire lake with garbage so show that it shows that if we continue not to care about pollution our lakes would end up being disgusting and filled with garbage.  I thought that was a great idea but I thought of a more emphasized idea. I thought that I could place garbage in one half of the lake and make the swimmer swim into the garbage. It would show you the lake without garbage and the half of the lake filled with garbage. It emphasizes that one day if we pollute and don’t stop, our lakes will be over flowing with garbage. It also shows that we would be putting ourselves in that position and pollution can cause health problems.

I chose this topic because I think that pollution in our society is a big problem and we need to fix it. Pollution in our world is huge and I feel like we’re killing earth faster by not caring and damaging it. My idea is pretty surreal because if the lake was filled with lots of garbage no one would swim in the water. The swimmer is supposed to represent the people and how we out ourselves into situations that aren’t good for our environment. The garbage as we know is supposed to represent garbage (pollution). The colours are mid-tones, not that bright and not to dull. It is what you would see on an everyday sunny day. I think I did well representing the symbolism that I wanted to portray.

To make this surreal photo, I used Adobe Photoshop. It is amazing to use, create, edit photos and many other things. The first step for me was to take pictures of the lake and garbage. I first went out and took pictures of the lake with a Nikon camera. I took pictures of the lake at different angles. I captured quite a few of photos. I also then took pictures of garbage by using the green screen. After taking photos, I then went on to use Photoshop. I made a file and the canvas size was 8x11. I pasted the lake first and that became layer 1. I then pasted the person (layer 2) onto the lake picture (layer 1). It was time for me to use the lasso tool which taking out background. You select around the area you want to disappear and it’s gone. I used this tool often in the process of creating the photo. I also used the magic wand tool which also takes out background. You do this by clicking on the area you want gone and select delete. This tool was helpful to use for getting fine and small pieces out. I used the lasso and magic wand tool to take out the background of the swimmer in a pool. Now you can see the swimmer but it still needs some editing because the colour doesn’t match. To fix the colour, I used Selective colour and played with the Blues and Cyans until I got to a match of the lake colour. This now makes the swimmer blended into the lake. I now have to put the garbage into the picture. I pasted it and it became layer 3. I used again the lasso and magic wand tool. I also used the Free Transform and Transform to play with the size and perspective of the garbage. This made the garbage look more part of the lake and the angle it was taken at. I used the exposure to make certain garbage darker because of the shadows. I copied the layer until I had enough to complete how I wanted it to look.

Overall, this was fun and challenging at times. I would say that this was my first time actually using Photoshop. I learned a lot from my teacher, friends and tutorials from the internet. I think I did pretty well for my first time but I know as I learn more I can make it better and other things I do better. I feel really satisfied with the swimmer and how I blended it to the lake but I don’t think the garbage was the best. Some parts were good but it was challenging to get it in perspective, the right brightness and the size. I would like to learn more about blending and making things more in proportionate. It was a lot of fun to learn and create this photo. I can`t wait to learn more.

Photoshop Tutorial

The assignment was to find a cool tutorial for Adobe Photoshop. I looked through a lot of tutorials and saw this one, Photoshop Tutorial. It shows you how to turn a normal photo into a mystical, dreamy effect.

It's a simple task and it's fun to play around with. This is a great tutorial that can help a photo or anything seem surreal or mystical. Check out this site for more tutorials--->Tutorials

Optical Toys - Thaumatrope

Thaumatrope was one of the first optical toys that have been invented. The purpose of this toy was to provide entertainment. John A. Paris had invented this in 1825. Thaumatrope was also known as "Turning Marvel" and " Wonder Turner".

The site made for this topic is very plain and boring. It's white and black. When I first saw this site, I thought that it was very plain and didn't catch my attention. It would be more exciting to look at if they used different colours and maybe a pattern or design to express what the sites about. Although, the information given was clear and thorough. It had great information about the different devices like: who it was made by, why it was made and how it works.

The toy I liked was the one you see above called "Thaumatrope".  This toy is created by a disk, two strings attached to it and drawings on the disk. It works by you pulling the strings and it creates the drawings as if they were on top of each other.

My Photoshop Trial

This is my Photoshop trial. The purpose of this assignment was to get to know the basics of using Photoshop. It was a lot of fun to do and learn about.

The first thing I did was to figure out what I was going to do it on. I chose to do it on a girl walking on a rainbow. It's pretty surreal. I found a photo of a rainbow by a beach. It's a nice scenery aswell. That photo became my backround. The next thing I did was find a photo of a girl walking. The girl walking became my second layer. I found a photo but I had to take out the backround. So to do this I used the Magic Wand tool. This tool easily takes out pieces of a photo by simply clicking wherever you click. It was a very easy and simple tool to use. I also used the Quick Selection tool to get the small pieces out of the photo.

Overall this process was easy and I look forward to using Photoshop more often. I also look forward to creating more detailed photos using this awesome program. Hoped you enjoyed! :)

My Chess Piece

This is my chess piece that I drew for my CyberARTS class. My chess piece had to have a sense of movement, pattern and value in the back round and the chess piece itself. The assignment also included a point of view so where you were looking at chess piece from. My point of view or angle was eye level. The chess piece had light on the right, shadow in the middle, a small amount of light on the right side and a bit of shadow on the very right.

The assignment as I said before needs to include a sense of movement and pattern in the back round. I think the piece shows movement because it leads your eye from the bottom to the top. I also did the swirly lines in a way that it brings your eyes to the main focus, the chess piece. Pattern in my back round is the repetition of swirly lines. It repeats four times and has different variety of length and value in the lines. I think the value in the swirly type of lines creates a nice variety of value with shades of lights and darks. For the variety of value I used a HB, 2B & 6B pencil.

Overall I'm happy with the outcome and I think it illustrates realistic characteristics in the chess piece itself like the value. I think I could have done better with the value and try and make the different values blend in better. Hope you enjoyed my art! :)

Composition in Our Photography

This picture shows pattern. This factor is created by repeating the diamond shape in the fence. It also leads your eyes diagonal and creates a lot of movement. The backround is the grass and the green color really makes the silver in the fence stand out which is also contrast.

This picture represents one of the composition rules which was the rule of thirds. This is shown by drawing 3 horizontal lines and 2 vertical lines. Where ever the lines intersect is where an important point of the picture should be. In this case the lines intersect around where the tackle is(people on the ground), number 90 on the gray team and number 33 on the gray team. Those are the main focuses of the photo.

This picture represents the diagonal rule. This is shown by the gray team, number 56 in the bottom right corner and the rest of the people going to the left. The line does not go all the way to the opposite side but is still moving in the direction. This leads your eye from the bottom right to the left and ends off with a big group of people on the side lines. This photo also shows perspective.

My Logo

My Logo

The first step we had to do was research our name. My name, Alisha, means Noble and protected by god. My last name, Ganga,  means river water. I chose to base my logo on  the qualities/words protected by god and river water.

With the qualities/words I chose, I came up with waves. This represents my last name which means river water. Long, wavy waves. I used direction to figure out what would look best or best describe my qualities. By doing that, I came to a conclusion that I would use waves and use them in a horizontal format. I chose to illustrate each wave with two lines and use a different type of color which was a sky blue and dark blue. By choosing two different colors it shows contrast between light and dark. This also makes the waves stand out. The person walking on water symbolizes a god like figure which in my opinion is a holy and spiritual figure. In reality, no one can actually walk on water.

In my logo the colors used are a sky blue and dark blue. Blue usually represents or reminds you of water. This relates to my name because my last name means river water. The line quality of the waves are thick, curvy and horizontal. The lines also show sturdiness and they're confident lines. The typography used in this logo is my name in the font "Futura"and the size of font is 14 pt. The typography in my logo illustrates confident and strong. I personally thought that adding the blue outline will represent my name being "protected" which is one of the meanings, protected by god. By adding the blue outline my name also stands out. Like i previously said, my logo represents water and protected by god. The waves used in my logo show water. The person walking on water represents a god-like figure. Walking on water in some religions is a holy and spiritual act. The person walking on water also illustrates that in reality no one can actually walk on water but being protected by god, it shows that god is helping/protecting the person over the water.

The technical part of this process was to draw thumbnails in our sketchbook. I came up with several ideas and then it was to go on to Adobe Illustrator. This is a tool that is used on the computer to create art or "draw" on the computer. There are different tools like the paint brush, pencil, crop, lines, and many more. Illustrator is an amazing tool and i recommend it to anyone.

Overall I'm happy with my logo and I think i showed my characteristics accuratly. My logo is creative and I hope it inspires people to try and create their own logos!

Hope you enjoyed my journey to create my logo!! :)

Composition in Photography

Focus on Photography - Composition   <------- Check It Out!

The first website is great for composition because it shows you some of the important factors like point of interest, color, simplicity and rule of thirds. I also really like how they gave an example of a photo for each factor and use the photo as an example. It helps a lot because you can understand when it is shown for you.

Photography: The Rules of Composition    <------- Check It Out!

This second website is also helpful because it clearly tells you what each factor is, for example
Rule of Thirds it clearly tells you that you have to draw three horizontal lines and three vertical lines and therefor where ever the lines intersect is where the important parts are.

Check these websites out!! :)

Logo Analysis

  Logo Type: Typography
(Disney)

I think this logo is intended for a younger audience for the ages of 6 years and younger. This company is a television station and creates books and movies.  I think the lines are supposed to express happiness and fun. The lines are loose and flowing. They’re very curvy and the direction is up and down. The shapes in this logo are a circle and a triangle.  This shape is recognizable and simple. The color in this logo is black and it is the main color. I think it doesn’t properly show company because it is a company attracting kids. The colors should be rainbow or a bright color like red, orange, yellow or green.

 Logo Type: Initials
 (BMW)

I think this logo is intended for adults because it is Car Company. The lines are straight and circular. I think the lines are supposed to show class and luxury. They are mechanical and very precise. This shows that this company is for luxury. There are recognizable shapes like circles and triangles. They are very precise and geometrically accurate. The colors in this logo are black, white, silver and blue.  These colors could show the beauty and the colors of the cars. I think this logo fits because it shows a lot of class.

Logo Type: Pictorial
(Google Chrome)

This is the Google Chrome Internet browser logo. This company is intended for everyone. The purpose of this company is to research, find music and connect with the world. The line type is straight and curved. They are using bright colors. I think the lines are trying to express a new generation of Internet browsers and this logo makes me think of robots. There is one circle that is in the middle and the rest of shapes are polygons.  The colors used in this logo are green, red, yellow and blue. These colors make the logo stand out. These colors have been Google’s main colors for a long time and by using these colors in their new logo, they are showing that they are the same Google but newer and faster.

 Logo Type: Abstract
(Recycle Logo)

I think the intended audience is for anyone that uses shoes. The line type is straight and diagonal. they`re very mechanical. The shapes in this logo are rectangles. The rectangles or bars increase each time. The color(s) used in this logo are black and blue. They used two different types of blue. These colors can show the type of colors used in shoes and the color blue can show comfort which is good for a shoe and types of clothing.

Logo Type: Combination
(Logitech)

This is Logitech’s logo. They’re a computer company. The intended audience is for people that use computers. The lines in this logo are straight, curved and circular. The colors used are green, black, red and gray. The green stands out more and makes your eyes move in a downward direction. I like the use of fading in the green object which also makes your eyes move.
